Why Does My Angle Grinder Keep Cutting Out

Few things are more frustrating than being halfway through a clean cut into steel or stone only for your angle grinder to suddenly shut down. Whether it dies completely, stutters intermittently, or stops the second you apply pressure, a cutting-out grinder is a common problem with a few straightforward fixes.

The exact cause usually depends on whether you are using a 18V cordless battery tool or a traditional 240V / 110V corded model.

Here is a systematic checklist to diagnose why your grinder keeps shutting off and how to get it running smoothly again.

1. Triggering Modern Electronic Protections (Cordless & Corded)

If you own a modern tool from brands like Makita, DeWalt, Milwaukee, or Bosch, the machine has built-in electronic safeguards designed to protect both you and the motor.

  • Overload Protection: If you lean too hard on the grinder, the motor draws excess current. To prevent the copper windings from burning out, the onboard circuit board cuts power instantly. The Fix: Let the wheel do the work; ease up on the downward pressure and let the high RPM slice through the material.
  • Kickback Control (Bind-Up Protection): If the cutting disc pinches or jams in the channel, the sudden drop in RPM triggers an emergency brake to stop the grinder from kicking back into your wrists. The Fix: Ensure your workpiece is clamped solidly so the cut channel doesn’t pinch together as the material separates.
  • Thermal Protection: Heavy-duty grinding generates immense heat inside the motor and battery pack. If thermal sensors detect unsafe temperatures, the tool cuts off until it cools down.
