How to Remove an Angle Grinder Disc Without the Tool

We have all been there. You are halfway through a DIY project or a quick cutting job in the garden, you go to swap a worn-out slitting disc for a fresh one, and you realize your pin spanner wrench is nowhere to be found.

Before you drop everything to run down to Screwfix, B&Q or Toolstation for a replacement tool, don’t panic. While using the official manufacturer’s spanner is always the safest option, you can easily remove a stuck angle grinder disc without the tool using items you already have lying around your garage or workshop.

Here are the three safest, most effective methods to get that disc off and get back to work.


Crucial First Step: Isolate the Power!

Before attempting any of these methods, you must completely eliminate the risk of accidental startup.

  • For Corded Grinders: Pull the plug out of the mains socket.
  • For Cordless Grinders: Pop the lithium-ion battery pack out entirely.

Never rely solely on the tool’s power switch when your fingers are this close to the spindle.


Method 1: The Vice-Grip / Locking Pliers Method (Recommended)

This is the closest approximation to using the actual tool and offers the best control without damaging your grinder. I would always recommend trying this method first.

1.Engage the Spindle Lock:

Press and hold down the black or red spindle lock button on the top gear casing of your grinder. This locks the shaft in place so it cannot rotate.

2.Adjust Your Pliers:

Take a set of locking pliers (Vice-Grips) or standard adjustable slip-joint pliers. Clamp them firmly onto the exposed flats of the round locking nut.

3.Turn Anti-Clockwise:

While keeping the spindle lock firmly pressed down, turn the pliers anti-clockwise (counter-clockwise). Angle grinder threads are standard right-hand threads, so the classic “righty-tighty, lefty-loosey” rule applies here.

4.Spin Off by Hand:

Once the initial stubborn resistance breaks, you can release the pliers and spin the locking nut off with your fingers.


Method 2: The Manual Wheel Spin (For Lightly Stuck Discs)

Because angle grinders rotate in the opposite direction of the thread tightening mechanism, they naturally tighten themselves slightly during use. If the disc isn’t completely jammed, you can leverage the disc itself to loosen the nut.

  1. Press and hold down the spindle lock button.
  2. Grab the outer edges of the old abrasive disc firmly (wear heavy-duty leather work gloves for this to protect your hands from raw abrasive edges).
  3. Forcefully twist the disc anti-clockwise.
  4. Because the nut is clamped against the disc, the friction will often cause the nut to loosen right along with the wheel.

⚠️ Safety Note: Only use this method on old, worn-out cutting or grinding discs that you intend to throw away, as the twisting force can micro-fracture the resin bond of the disc. Never try this on a diamond blade, as you risk warping the expensive steel core.


Method 3: The Hammer and Punch (The Last Resort)

If the locking nut is completely seized because the disc shattered during use, you will need a bit of impact force.

  1. Find a punch, a blunt chisel, or even a thick nail, along with a hammer.
  2. Engage the spindle lock.
  3. Place the tip of the punch inside one of the two pin holes on the face of the locking nut.
  4. Angle the punch at roughly a 45-degree angle, pointing in the anti-clockwise direction.
  5. Tap the end of the punch gently but firmly with the hammer. The impact should jar the nut loose, allowing you to unscrew it by hand.

How to Prevent Your Disc from Getting Stuck Next Time

To avoid needing these workarounds in the future, follow these two simple trade practices:

  • Don’t Over-Tighten by Hand: When fitting a new disc, just tighten the locking nut hand-tight while holding the spindle lock. The rotational kinetic energy of the tool turning on will naturally tighten the nut to the perfect operating torque.
  • Keep the Backing Flange Clean: Ensure no metal filings, grit, or concrete dust get trapped between the inner flange, the disc, and the locking nut. A quick wipe down during disc changes works wonders.

These are all temporary suggestions of course. At some point it’s always best to pick up a pin spanner and these cost around £4-5 in the UK.
