I think you have to keep in mind the price point. This model just doesn't have the same quality as the others on the list, but you get what you pay for. This in my opinion will be OK for occasional use, but you will lose out on accuracy and precision.

How to Choose?

Thanks to the advancement of Lithium-Ion technology, cordless jigsaws are now a great option for many home users and professionals alike. We have explained below exactly what features you should consider when it comes to buying a cordless jigsaw.

There are a few things to consider before parting with any of your hard earned cash. We have listed those below so as you can consider each one and better understand why they might matter to you and the jobs you plan on using this for.

How Much do Cordless Jigsaws cost in the UK?

The average cost of a cordless jigsaw varies from £70-£100. On top of that you have to then get a battery and charger which costs on average another £100. So, if you don't own any cordless tools, then your first one is going to be expensive. Once you have it though, then buying other cordless tools from the same brand is going to be cheaper.

Battery Platforms -  A BIG Decision

If you have looked at cordless power tools, you will understand the importance of batteries. The bottom line is that a cordless jigsaw, like any power tool, is only as good as the battery and charger it comes with. This should be a big decision for many people, but easily overlooked by many UK buyers. Allow me to explain.

Tool Only/Bare Tools

Most cordless jigsaws are sold as "tool only" or "bare tool." That means they you are buying the tool but it doesn't come with a battery or a charger. Clearly you need to buy the actual jigsaw, along with a battery and a charger so as it can be used.

All tool brands want you to buy their range of cordless tools. To achieve this they make all their cordless tools such as drills, circular saws, sanders, planers etc operate off the same type of battery and charger. It makes sense for the brands.

For example, let's assume you own a Dewalt 18V battery and charger for your cordless drill/driver, then buying a tool only cordless jigsaw makes sense as you only have to buy the cordless jigsaw and use your existing battery and charger.

This is really a question of deciding which brand of power tools you want to, or are willing to invest in. That makes this a very important decision.

Which brands make cordless jigsaws for the UK market?

There are lots of brands. The bigger and more expensive brands include Dewalt, Makita, Ryobi and Bosch. These will not be cheap but they are all very high quality with good customer service, good warranties and easy to buy blades for and spares should you ever need them.

There are also cheaper brands such as Black & Decker, Blue Ridge, Evolution, JCB, Ingco and Einhell who sit in the mid-range of price points. These are also good quality jigsaws with good customer service and available blades and spares. They are not the highest quality but good enough for home use.

At the lower end of the market you will find brands like Jellas, Dewinner, Enventor and Posenpro. These will be the cheapest but you will struggle to find websites for these companies or contact information. Some of these jigsaws still get good enough reviews. If you don't plan on doing a lot of work with your jigsaw then these are certainly worth a closer look.

Jigsaw Motor Power

These come in different battery sizes. A pretty ignorant but effective rule of thumb is, the higher the voltage the better. With the better and much improved Lithium-Ion batteries, anything 18 Volts or above works really well to drive the motor.

Blade Changing

Initially when buying any type of jigsaw, you may not think of how the blade is changed. Trust me on this, it can be really annoying, if you get the wrong type. Most good cordless jigsaws will use some form of quick release blade.

In other words you can quickly change a blade without the use of tools. Some jigsaws hold the blade in place using a clamp that is then tightened by a screw. Some use an Allen key. My advice is to avoid those. The screw driving one gives trouble over time as the head of the screw can start to fragment. It also wastes time when you simply want to get a job done.

Make sure it is a tool free operation is my strong advice.

Variable Speeds on a Jigsaw

When cutting materials like wood, plastic or metals being able to control the speed of the strokes per minute(spm), can be an important consideration. The huge majority of cordless and indeed corded jigsaws have a maximum speed of around 3,000 spm.

That really is more than enough for almost all sawing tasks. Ideally though you want a jigsaw with a range of speeds. Somewhere between 4-8 speed settings is ideal. That allows you to cut through different types of material without either burning them, or putting too much load on your blade.

LED Work Space Lighting

In the past I thought this was more of a nice to have for my jigsaw. Now I would not buy one that doesn't have it. It makes a huge difference when it comes to being able to easily see the line that you are cutting along.

Bevel Cuts

Most UK users buy a jigsaw to do some pretty basic cuts. One cut that might be worth your consideration is a bevel cut. That is a cut where you can tilt the base of the jigsaw to a particular angle, and make a cut at that angle. They are used mainly in woodworking for table edges and for some cupboards and drawers.

If that is important to you, it is worth checking that your jigsaw has that feature.

Weight and Fatigue

Cordless jigsaws will always be heavier than their corded counterparts. That is simply because they have the additional weight of the battery. Many buyers say this is a good thing as the weight of the saw, keeps it steadier and you can make a better cut. While there is some merit in that, you just don't want the jigsaw to be too heavy.

A heavy saw can be tough on the hands and arms. Over time that can cause user fatigue. Ideally, somewhere between 3.5-5 Kg is the ideal weight. Some of the very cheap cordless jigsaws weigh a ton, and I would avoid those.

Dust Blower

Keeping the cutting line clear is also really important. If you have used a jigsaw that has a dust blower, and one that hasn't, you instantly notice a big difference. If you plan on using this tool on a regular basis, then make sure this is on the list of features.

My Final Thoughts

If you already own cordless tools from a particular brand, and are happy with their performance, then it makes perfect sense to stick with them, and buy a tool only cordless jigsaw. If you just need to use one of these from time to time, then a lower priced model, like the Dewinner model we have shown above is the best solution.

The hardest decision is for anyone who doesn't own power tools and wants to get started. The professionals, trades and serious DIYers will most likely buy Makita, DeWalt or Milwaukee as those are the best and built to last. They are expensive though so the budget will be stretched.

A lot of DIYers and homeowners go for brands like Bosch and Ryobi, as these are very good quality tools. While still expensive, they are not as high as the very top end brands.
